How to Properly Wear Disposable Gloves?

Proper use of disposable gloves by healthcare workers is not only a form of self-protection but also a way to ensure patient safety and demonstrate responsibility towards patients. Now, how should healthcare workers properly wear gloves? This is indeed a skill that requires attention.

1. Glove-Wearing Method

  1. Hold the inner side of the folded edge of the gloves with your right hand, then take out a pair of gloves.
  2. First, insert your left hand into the left glove. After putting on the left glove, slide your left hand into the outer circle of the folded edge of the right glove.
  3. Next, insert your right hand into the right glove (you can also put on the right glove first, if preferred).
  4. Pull the folded edge of the gloves up over your cuff, ensuring no part of your wrist is exposed.
  5. Key rule: Before putting on the gloves, do not let your bare hands touch the outer surface of the gloves; after putting on the gloves, do not let the gloved hands touch your bare skin.

2. Wearing Double-Layer Gloves

Wearing double-layer gloves reduces the wearer’s risk of exposure to hazards. If double-layer gloves are required for specific procedures (e.g., chemotherapy, bone marrow aspiration), choose loose-fitting gloves to ensure one pair can be easily fitted over the other.

3. Timely Glove Replacement

  • After coming into contact with a suspected contaminated area or item of the same patient, replace your gloves before touching mucous membranes.
  • Before handling non-contaminated items or attending to another patient, remove your gloves first, then wash your hands immediately or clean them with a disinfectant solution. This prevents the spread of microorganisms to other patients or items.

4. Duration of Glove Wear

The longer gloves are worn, the more likely their protective barrier is to become damaged.

5. Glove Removal

During use, the outer surface of gloves may be contaminated by infectious agents—so proper glove removal is crucial:

  • Do not force or pull hard when removing gloves. Instead, turn the gloves inside out and peel them off gently.
  • Try to avoid touching the outer surface of the gloves with your bare hands.
  • Disinfect the removed gloves promptly; do not simply throw them into a waste bin.

Incorrect glove removal may lead to the spread of contaminants on the glove’s outer surface, rendering even the most effective protective barrier meaningless.
